THE GUNS OF SICILY
Honoring Canada's Gunners who fought in Sicily on the Anniversary of Op HUSKY.
Today is the anniversary of Operation HUSKY - the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943 - and the first taste of battle for Canada's gunners.
Beyond infantry and armoured brigades, the 1st Canadian Divisional Artillery bore a weighty burden—supplying relentless preparatory fires, suppressing enemy positions in rugged hills, and supporting infantry advances through blazing heat and mountainous terrain. Their steel thunder was decisive in securing key objectives from Pachino to Agira—and beyond.
I’ve found that many aren’t aware of this story. That inspired me to write “The Guns of Sicily: The 1st Canadian Divisional Artillery in Operation Husky,” an article that was published in Canadian Military History, to shine a light on the courage and professionalism of our Canada's gunners in the Sicilian Campaign.
